Psychoanalysis

What is psychoanalysis?

Psychoanalysis is a more intensive form of therapy that involves several sessions per week, usually over a period of years. The frequency of meetings facilitates the development of a deeper therapeutic relationship in which there is space for experiencing and in-depth exploration of thoughts, feelings, and patterns of relating. The patient is encouraged to say as best they can whatever comes to mind— everything from dreams, memories, and things that feel significant and meaningful, to the mundane and seemingly irrelevant. As the analyst and patient develop trust and work together to understand the patient’s authentic experience, patterns in the therapeutic relationship emerge and can be observed, better understood, and worked through in a safe and caring way. People who participate in analysis often report that the experience can be challenging, yet also profoundly enriching and life-changing. They tend to describe experiencing more vitality and fulfillment in life, capacity for deeper and more satisfying relationships, and a greater sense of personal freedom.

Appointments & More Information

I see patients in my practice for psychoanalysis as a candidate (analyst in training) through the Center for Psychoanalytic Studies in Houston. Please call (832-931-4540) to learn more and to discuss the possibility of working together. Often, we may decide it would be helpful for us to meet for several initial sessions to discuss your different thoughts, feelings, and/or apprehensions about potentially beginning this type of treatment and to help you decide if it is a good fit for you.
